"The Ballad of Lefty Brown" opens with a quotation from the historian Frederick Jackson Turner (1861-1932), who delivered a famous speech about the closing of the western frontier at the Columbian Exposition in 1893: "The frontier environment is at first too strong for the man. He must accept the conditions which it furnishes or perish." The film offers a portrait of the West in which men do not accept the prevailing conditions, but work against honest frontier values in the spirit of greed and self-interest. One man stands tall against the "new" order: the sodbuster Lefty Brown.
The time is 1889. The place is Red Bluff, Montana. The leader who best embodies the old spirit of the dying west, Governor Edward Johnson, is murdered apparently by rustlers. But as Johnson's partner, Lefty Brown discovers a far different story that emerges in a conspiracy extending to the highest levels of frontier government.
The film was beautifully photographed with breath-taking images of the northern plains. And yet, the filmmakers chose not to use the anamorphic camera lens for the panoramic effects, but 2 Perf. 35 mm for greater realism. The film was shot in Bannack, a ghost town in Beaverhead County, Montana. The interior designs, the costumes, and the period details were superb.
Bill Pullman delivers an excellent performance as the humble, illiterate Lefty, who describes himself as "the man who never got anything right in sixty odd years." This may be a perceptive self-analysis. But there is a nobility of character to Lefty that is made clear to the young Jeremiah Perkins, who admires Lefty like one of the heroes from the Western dime novels.
Kathy Baker plays the only woman in the cast, the fiercely independent widow, Laura Johnson. The role was modeled on real life figure of Mary Ann "Molly" Goodnight, a historic rancher in Texas in the years following annexation.
Often the ideal clashes with the reality of the frontier, as apparent in the erratic behavior of Tom Harrah. Perhaps more than any other character, it was alcoholic Harrah who embodied the superficial heroism and the sordid reality underneath the surface in the mythology of the West.
In the bonus segment of the DVD version of the film, writer-director Jared Moshé underscored how the classic film western has traditionally depicted the "myth of America." The film was successful in delivering a portrait of the west that includes "warts and all." The world of "The Ballad of Lefty Brown" was described as "the tragedy of changing times." In this regard, the film captures the dynamism of the west and how the expanding frontier was constantly evolving over time..

A thrilling and action-packed Western, The Ballad of Lefty Brown is a story about loyalty, friendship, and the relentless pursuit of justice. The Ballad of Lefty Brown is a film that i knew little about and i wasn't that excited to see it but after just finishing it i gotta say this was one hell of a western with an excellent cast, a great story, terrific cinematography and some great dramatic moments. The relationship between Lefty, Jeremiah and Tom was handled great plus there wasn't even a second that i felt bored or anything this was an excellent filmed, well shot and well made film that i believe if you give it a fair shot will suprise the hell out of you. (A+).
